Te whakapakari tahi i tō tātau Taiao – Enhancing our environment together.

Our vision is a healthy environment and a resilient and prosperous community.

About The opportunity | Ko te āheinga:

This summer, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is offering a three-month paid Internship Programme to students who are studying towards a formal qualification that directly relates to the work we do here. Thess Fixed Term placements run from November 2025 to February 2026 (don’t worry, we can work the dates around your exams) and will provide you with interesting, paid, full-time work as well as career development while you study. This opportunity to work and learn in the field is hugely valuable to your growth as a student.

The Public Transport Network Change Support Summer Students will support the rollout of Council’s new bus network by helping communicate changes to existing users, potential users, and community representatives. This will include face-to-face engagement (“boots on the ground”), distribution of information, and installation of new signage at bus stops across the network. The role is both office-based and field-based, and will suit someone who is confident with people, proactive, and willing to get hands-on. This internship will provide a hands-on experience in public transport operations and community engagement. With a mix of outdoor and office-based work you will be part of a supportive team-focused environment within the council, with the opportunity to make a positive difference in how people connect with their community. Weekend work may be required from time to time as part of the role.

About you | E pā ana ki a koe:

We are looking for enthusiastic students who are well-organised, show high levels of initiative and can work independently or with a team when required. You will have strong communications skills, with the ability to explain information clearly in a friendly and personable manner when talking to a wide range of people. Attention to detail when managing signage and checking the accuracy of information is key, alongside being physically fit to carry out field work. You will need to possess good computer skills and have the flexibility to work some weekends. Interest in public transport, sustainability, or community engagement is an advantage.

Requirements for the programme:

  • You will have completed or be studying towards a formal qualification in a relevant field.
  • A valid full or restricted driver’s licence is essential.
  • Physical fitness is required for all our student roles.

You will need to have current working rights in New Zealand to be considered for these placements.
