Community groups receive funding to boost biodiversity

Fifteen community groups championing biodiversity across Hawke’s Bay have received support in the second 2025 round of the Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay Environmental Enhancement Contestable Fund.

Delivered in partnership by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay, and the Eastern & Central Community Trust (ECCT), the fund supports community-led projects that protect and restore the region’s environment.

ECCT’s recent $60,000 contribution, combined with the Regional Council’s $50,000 investment, has allowed more groups to progress their work on the ground.

Regional Council Chair Sophie Siers says the successful projects show what’s possible when communities and organisations work together.

“People are at the heart of these projects. It’s inspiring to see communities across Hawke’s Bay stepping up to protect the places they love. Biodiversity isn’t just a council priority – it’s a shared responsibility. When local knowledge, passion, and partnerships come together, we can deliver lasting gains for our environment. This funding strengthens that collective effort and helps secure a healthier, more resilient Hawke’s Bay for future generations.”

Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay General Manager Debbie Monahan says the level of interest reflects the region’s strong commitment to biodiversity.

“The response to this funding round shows how dedicated our communities are to protecting the environment. These projects show innovation and a shared vision for a healthier region. It’s encouraging to see such strong engagement across Hawke’s Bay.”

ECCT Chief Executive David Clapperton adds, “Collaboration makes these projects possible. By combining resources and supporting community-led initiatives, we’re helping deliver real gains across Hawke’s Bay.”

There will be two funding rounds in 2026, with more information available early next year at biodiversityhb.org.
