Hawke’s Bay Trails: On the right track and picking up pace

The Hawke’s Bay Trails Great Ride is not just on the right track - it’s gaining momentum, with more people than ever choosing to ride, walk, and explore the region.

Spanning nearly 200 km of flat, easy-riding trails across the region, the Hawke’s Bay Trails are recognised as one of Ngā Haerenga – The Great Rides of New Zealand, a nationwide network of premium cycling experiences. The Hawke’s Bay Trails is managed by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and supported by Napier City Council and Hastings District Council.

Latest evaluation results from Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand show positive insights into the trails. The report estimates 453,221 trips were made on the trails in the year to June 2025, a six percent increase since 2021, further cementing Hawke’s Bay as one of the country’s leading cycling destinations.

Participants rated the network highly, with 66 percent scoring their visit 9 or 10 out of 10 and the Trails achieving a Net Promoter Score of +80.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Chair Sophie Siers says the results speak to the strength of the trail network and the community behind it.

“These results are outstanding, and it’s wonderful to see so many people out on the trails, making the most of everything they offer. The growing use of the trail network shows just how valued they have become.”

She says that the network’s success is the result of genuine collaboration.

“The trails are built on partnership. Hastings District Council, Napier City Council, Central Government, iwi, businesses, and community groups have all played a role making the Hawke’s Bay Trails a success. It’s that collaboration that keeps the network thriving and delivering real benefits for our region.”

The evaluation also highlights community support – 94 percent of participants agreeing the trails are valued locally and 83 percent saying they’re a source of pride.

Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum says the Hawke’s Bay Trails are now a key part of the community.

“The Hawke’s Bay Trails link seamlessly into our iWay network, making it easy for people to move around Hastings actively. They also play an important role in improving the liveability of our district and supporting the wellbeing of the communities within it and contributing to our local economy.”

Napier Mayor Richard McGrath says the trail network is helping to bring people into the city and boost local businesses.

“More people on the trails means more people jumping off their bike and enjoying our cities, exploring what we have to offer. Every time someone bikes into town, it frees up a carparking space.”

“For Napier, the Hawke’s Bay Trails are delivering real value by supporting local businesses, strengthening our visitor economy, and helping our city thrive.”
