Boaties urged to help protect Hawke’s Bay waters

With boating season approaching, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is urging boaties to help protect the region’s coastal environment by ensuring boat hulls, anchors, and equipment are kept clean.

Under the Hawke’s Bay Regional Pest Management Plan, all vessels entering regional waters must have a properly cleaned and anti-fouled hull, with no more than a light slime layer and/or goose barnacles.

Marine pests can easily hitch a ride on hulls, anchors, trailers, and other gear. Ensuring vessels are clean before leaving and entering Hawke’s Bay is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stop these species spreading.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Senior Biosecurity Advisor Alice McNatty says there are invasive pests that pose a serious threat to the coastlines we love, our economy, and our way of life.

“Two pests we’re particularly concerned about are Mediterranean fanworm and clubbed tunicate. These species are already causing significant problems in other regions, where they outcompete native marine life and alter entire ecosystems, negatively impact the marine environment we all enjoy. We do not want them in Hawke’s Bay, and once they become established, they are extremely difficult to remove.”

“Remember, your boat doesn’t need to look dirty for pests to latch on. Many can cling to surfaces that appear clean. Regular checks and cleaning are essential.”

Regional Councillor Di Roadley says protecting the marine environment is important, especially as the region gears up for summer.

“Our marine environment is a big part of what makes summer in Hawke’s Bay special, but marine pests can quickly threaten that. Biosecurity is a key focus for Regional Council, but protecting our waters is something we all play a part in. Taking steps to stop pests hitching a ride into our region helps keep our waters healthy for years to come.”

It’s strongly recommended that boaties haul their vessels out for a thorough clean before the busy summer season to avoid spreading marine pests between regions.
