Boating safety: A ‘no-brainer’ this summer

With boating season quickly approaching, and more people heading out to enjoy the region’s waters, staying safe on the water this summer is a no-brainer.

Regional Council Harbourmaster Adrian Wright says that enjoying the water safely and coming home to whānau should always be the focus.

“Everyone heads out on the water looking forward to a good day and getting home safely to their whānau. Being prepared and making good decisions is what helps make that happen, especially in Hawke’s Bay where conditions can change quickly.”

Whether people are heading out boating with mates, paddleboarding, jet skiing or taking part in any other water activity, Mr Wright says the message is the same.

“Before you head out, check your gear, know the rules, and make sure your vessel is safe. Remember that life jackets save lives, carry two forms of waterproof communication, and check the weather before you leave and while you’re on the water.

“If you’re the skipper, the responsibility for everyone’s safety starts with you - make sure your crew is prepared and you have everything you need. Just like on the road, the water has rules too, so it’s essential that skippers understand them before heading out.”

Regional Council Chair Sophie Siers says boating safety is a key responsibility of the Regional Council and an important part of keeping communities safe over summer.

“Keeping people safe on the water is an important function of Regional Council. Our role is to manage maritime safety in Hawke’s Bay and that includes making sure people have the information and education they need to enjoy the water safely.

“At the same time, we all need to play our part. Taking personal responsibility is equally important - planning ahead, wearing a lifejacket, and looking out for others helps make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on the water.”

The Harbourmaster team will be active across the region on and off the water throughout summer, engaging with boaties, running safety education courses, and providing lifejacket libraries - a free ACC initiative where people can borrow, use, and return lifejackets.
