Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has again been affirmed with a strong AA credit rating and a Stable outlook by international ratings agency Fitch.
The independent assessment confirms the Council’s prudent financial management and its ability to borrow at lower interest rates, helping keep long term costs down for Hawke’s Bay ratepayers.
Council Chair Sophie Siers said the rating was reassuring at a time when councils across the country face significant financial and infrastructure pressures.
“This rating matters because it directly affects how much it costs the Council to invest in essential services,” Chair Siers said. “A strong AA rating means we can fund critical work like flood protection, environmental management and transport at lower cost, which is better for ratepayers.”
Fitch noted that Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s financial profile is among the strongest of its peers, supported by conservative debt levels, resilient revenue and careful liquidity management. The agency also assessed the Council’s approach to managing debt and cash reserves as “Stronger.”
Chair Siers said the outcome reflected consistent, disciplined financial stewardship over time.
“This is a result of many years of careful decision making, particularly through challenging periods such as Cyclone Gabrielle recovery,” she said. “It shows the Council is well placed to continue delivering for the region while managing costs responsibly.”
The Council also acknowledged the work of its Finance and Corporate Services teams in maintaining a strong financial position.
“I want to recognise the dedication and expertise of our Finance team,” Chair Siers said.
“Their work plays a critical role in ensuring the Council remains financially stable and resilient for the future.”
