Catchment Worker - Regional Parks

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Works Group is a standalone business unit wholly owned and operated by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.  The Group undertakes a range of activities based mainly around the Region’s rivers and drainage network.

A position has come available to assist with the maintenance of the Council’s regional park, river and stream enhancement projects. We want someone who has initiative, can work alone with a commitment to working in a safe manner, and an ability to effectively organise their own work programme.  You need a positive work ethic, a can-do attitude, and have the physical ability, energy and enthusiasm to get the job done.

The day-to-day role involves a range of minor maintenance works in a number of regional parks and river recreational areas including Te Mata Park, Waitangi wetlands, Pakowhai Country Park and Tutira Regional Park, and will include enhancement planting, tree felling, weed spraying, track maintenance, fencing repairs, scrub baring and public liaison.  You will also assist with identifying and planning identified significant work in the parks.  You will also be involved in other catchment work as is required.

 The following attributes are required for the role:

  • A strong desire to work with parks, plants and people.
  • Hold a clean full car driver’s licence ideally with 4WD experience.
  • Be physically fit.
  • Have a broad range of practical skills such as experience with chainsaw and scrub bar, fencing, and weed spraying.
  • Have an aptitude for learning and continuous improvement.
  • Able to plan and work unsupervised.
  • Good communication skills and a level of comfort dealing with the public.
  • Growsafe and chainsaw certification would be preferable, but not essential.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team.

A pre-employment drug test is a requirement for this position.
