Water Quality and Ecology Student

HBRC have a great opportunity for three students to work with the Water Quality and Ecology team and gain practical experience to complement their studies. We are looking for students with a passion for the environment to assist our team of technicians over the summer months to monitor our beautiful rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal environment.

The core responsibilities for a summer student will be to assist the team with the recreational bathing beach and ecosystem health monitoring programmes. Students will assist with special investigations and state of environment monitoring when required and may have the opportunity to develop skills in a range of monitoring equipment and technique, including:

  • Macroinvertebrate sampling;
  • Ecological surveys: freshwater fish, intertidal reef, coastal and estuarine infauna;
  • Ecological assessments: periphyton, macrophyte and habitat;
  • Water sampling;
  • Flow measurements;
  • Use of field equipment, loggers and databases.

We are looking for friendly, well-organised people that can show high levels of initiative and the ability to work independently or as a team when required. Applicants should have completed or be studying towards a degree in biology, ecology or environmental science. A current driver’s licence and competency driving a manual transmission vehicle is required.

Dates:

The fixed-term positions will be available for up to 16 weeks from November 2020 to March 2021. Exact dates will be determined by student availability and project needs.
