Heavy rain expected over the next few days

Car in the rain
We understand the community will be concerned about the forecast heavy rain.

MetService has issued an Orange heavy rain warning for Ruahine Range, Kaweka Forest Park and Hawke’s Bay from State Highway 5 southwards from 9am, Thursday 22 June to midnight, Saturday 24 June.

Over the next 60 hours, 200 to 250 mm of rain is expected in the Ruahine Range, and Kaweka Forest Park, and 100 to 150 mm of rain around the coastal hills of Central Hawke’s Bay.

River levels are rising, and if the rain continues as forecast, this may cause Waipawa and Tukituki rivers to reach five year levels and Wairoa, Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro to reach annual event levels.

So there may be some localised surface ponding, however we don’t expect significant flooding of the main rivers.

Our staff are monitoring river levels and we have crews on stand-by if any action is required.

If you have any concerns about surface ponding, please contact your local council.
