Sustainable Homes

We want to help improve the healthiness of your home with our Sustainable Homes programme. We can assist with funding and grants for clean heating, insulation, solar power systems, double glazing, water storage and septic tanks, all to make your home a healthy and efficient place to live.

Sustainable Homes is a Regional Council programme created for everyone in Hawke’s Bay so they can have a healthy home to live in. To find out if you’re eligible for a fund or grant check out the product you’re interested in using the tiles below.

Scroll down to more information about how funding works, and the benefits of our Sustainable Homes programme.

How does it work?

All eligible ratepayers can borrow up to $20,000 from the regional council. This is repaid over ten years by way of a voluntary targeted rate. The rate is not a loan and interest rates vary depending on the product and where you live.

To apply for funding there’s a few steps you need to take:

  1. Figure out what product you are after and if you are eligible
  2. Get at least two quotes from the approved suppliers listed on our website before deciding on a supplier
  3. Complete the online Sustainable Homes application form, or print, sign, and provide to the Regional Council
  4. Get your supplier to start work when your application is approved. Once work has been done, the supplier will invoice the Regional Council
  5. When we have paid the contractor, the voluntary targeted rate is loaded onto your property rates and direct debit payments start

What we are trying to achieve for Hawke’s Bay people:

  • More homes that are warmer and drier to help improve health
  • Increased energy efficiency and reduced dependence on networked supply
  • 85% of renewable energy use for the region increases to 100%
  • Better water quality by getting rid of contaminating leachate from septic tanks that need replacing
  • Continued improvement of air quality to meet World Health Organisation standards
  • Improved ability for people to cope through a civil defence emergency with homes equipped with stored water and solar energy
