As New Zealand has signed up to MARPOL Annex VI, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, all vessels operating in Hawke's Bay waters are required to use compliant fuel or exhaust gas cleaning systems.
The Ministry for the Environment, Regional Councils and Maritime New Zealand are working together to develop a nationwide strategy for Āpitihanga VI o Te Tiriti MARPOL, MARPOL Annex VI Treaty.
While this is being completed, the following applies to vessels within Hawke’s Bay regional waters:
All vessels within regional waters are required to provide information and records regarding the use of exhaust gas cleaning systems or fuel composition upon request by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Harbourmaster or Enforcement Officers.
MARPOL is an international convention for preventing pollution from ships. Annex VI to the convention will reduce emissions from fuel that are harmful to our environment and the health of people living in and around ports.
