Navigation Safety Bylaw

The Hawke's Bay Navigation Safety Bylaw enables the Regional Council to regulate and provide for users to safely use and share the water (coastal and inland) in Hawke’s Bay – for commercial and/or recreational purposes.

Why do we have a Navigation Bylaw?

Bylaws exist to protect, promote and maintain public health and safety and are created in response to the needs and concerns of our community. They evolve and change over time.

Hawke's Bay's waterways are used by thousands of people every day for a wide range of activities. To help ensure these activities can co-exist safely, rules are set under the Navigation Safety Bylaw to help manage them.

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council adopted the Hawke's Bay Navigation Safety Bylaw 2024 on 13 December 2023, following public consultation from 29 September - 29 October 2023. This Bylaw came into effect on 19 March 2024.
